If you could repeat one day from your life, what would it be and why?

I am an experienced deep diver – I have been diving in wrecks, caves, and mines for over 20 years. I remember when I was diving the WWII wreck “Franken” for the first time in my life as a beginner in technical diving. It’s a wreck lying in the Baltic Sea at a depth of 50-75 meters. On that day, I saw it for the first time and from that day on, I knew that I would dedicate a large part of my diving life to this wreck. I have been on the wreck itself more than 100 times later. And it was on that day that I simply fell in love with this kind of wreck diving – I would like to relive that moment, the excitement, and that great taste of the adventure ahead of me.

Can you tell us more about your role and background?

I am the country manager responsible for the entire Tradedoubler business in Poland and the CEE region. Because of how big a team we already have in Poland, my role is now primarily people-related – I think, I would say of myself now that I am Head of People & Culture. My professional mission is to build the best workplace in every respect. Also, of course, from a business development point of view and looking after the sales performance of our clients.

Before joining Tradedoubler, I worked for global FMCG companies and co-founded one of the first digital agencies in Poland.

Above and beyond that, I am a certified business trainer, coach, and mentor.


What is so special about your daily work?

The team! I’m very fortunate and privileged to work with some of the best performance marketing experts, great people, and colleagues. And it is our shared feeling that we are truly supporting our clients’ businesses by delivering the results they want. I have a shared sense of delivering great value for our clients and publishers.



Past


In what ways has Tradedoubler changed since you started?

When I started at Tradedoubler, no one knew about affiliate marketing, and performance marketing. We were operating in a completely new field and, as pioneers, we were building this market from scratch. When we started, the Polish team consisted of 6 people and generated Order Value worth PLN 200 million. Today it is the largest player in Poland and CEE, A 60-people team and an Order Value more than PLN 5bn.

What was your major success with Tradedoubler since you started in 2008?

These successes have been many, as evidenced by numerous industry awards, but also awards for creating a good work culture. The most important awards for me include Great Place to Work and the title I recently won of e-commerce Champion 2023.


Were there any notable moments during this time? What were they? Did they do something for you?

The breakthrough transformation for us was the implementation of the 6-hour working day with great success. That changed a lot in our organization and allowed us to become not only a pioneer in performance marketing, but even a global pioneer in terms of creating a work culture. Anyway, in general, I often refer to myself as an advocate of an accountability culture.


What are you passionate about in the industry and this company in general?

Above all, it is the co-creation of the entire e-commerce ecosystem, being it’s an important part and having a real impact on digital. Working digitally is a very modern job, in tune with the biggest trends. And it has a gigantic impact on business development, influencing the success of many companies.

It’s also important to me that digital marketing is a dynamic and changing environment, requiring creativity and innovation, but also good analytics and data optimization.



Conclusion


What advice would you give to recent new entrants?

These aspects make working in digital marketing potentially passionate and rewarding for those who value a dynamic environment, creativity, data analysis, and business impact. So, my advice is: to stay updated, stay curious and experiment, and develop soft skills.

Maintain the diversification of Publishers in an Affiliate Program



The structure of publishers within affiliate programs is very diverse. Our research every year shows that within a single affiliate program, there can be up to a dozen different categories of publishers covering all or a large part of the classic sales funnel: From building awareness, interest, and desire to user action or loyalty.

When selecting affiliate networks, eCommerce advertisers very often state sales as the main goal of the partnership. Consequently, a large proportion of them assumes that the primary billing model should be Cost per Sale (CPS) since the aim of the partnership is to generate sales. Furthermore, advertisers expect a high diversification of sources and publisher categories. The initial assumption is correct, as it is largely based on budget certainty with appropriate commission levels and fair compensation for the business partners for the effect achieved. But there are also some challenges, which will be discussed in more detail below.



The Sales Funnel


The first is the Sales Funnel and the user’s typical purchase path. There is a group of users who first search for information about a product group, e.g. hoovers. This provides information about the available models on the market, the features, the design of the different products, etc. At this stage, they don’t know yet which model or brand they want to buy. They usually get this information from content sites like blogs, influencers, or industry article sites. Only afterwards, when they are aware of the situation, they will move to the next step, which is the desire to buy a specific model or product. The information in this phase usually comes from review sites or sites that refer to different types of feedback from other users. At the very end, they use websites that interact at the bottom of the funnel, such as price comparison websites, voucher/promotion websites, or cashback/loyalty websites. Very often, the last interaction with an offer before the final purchase comes from these sites.



The Attribution Model


Another important factor is the attribution model, which in most affiliate programs is configured in such a way that the conversion is attributed to the source from which the last click originated. In this case, when analysing a user’s purchase path, it is easy to see that most conversions are attributed to publishers at the lower level of the sales funnel. That is a natural situation, as few users decide to buy a product after seeing the available offer on the market. The price still plays an important role for a large part of consumers. So, when a potential customer decides to buy a certain product model, there is a high probability that they will check the price in different places in order not to overpay. Of course, price comparison is easier in some product categories (electronics) and more difficult in others (fashion), but even in these harder-to-compare product categories, there are publishers who interact with users at the bottom of the funnel, such as publishers who offer remarketing activities.



The hybrid remuneration model


At Tradedoubler, we are aware of this and use a hybrid billing model. We reward publishers at the top end of the sales funnel, who can rarely expect a measurable commission in the classic attribution model, even though they deliver real added value to the advertiser in the form of interactions with the ad or referrals to the website of the shop. The classic attribution model is based on a combined Cost per Sale (CPS) and Cost per Click (CPC) model. In this way, publishers can expect to receive a commission in the first phase of a user’s path to purchase, regardless of whether the conversion is attributed directly to them or to another source.

This solution helps to keep content publishers in affiliate programs. We have noticed that in programs where advertisers have switched exclusively to a pure CPS model, the number of content publishers who generate content has decreased significantly, and in extreme cases, these publishers have stopped their advertising activities completely. This happenes because, after a recalculation of the return on investment, it becomesapparent that such advertising activities were simply unprofitable from their point of view.



How to do it


In summary, there is a need to ensure that publishers are adequately remunerated for their work to maintain interaction with users at the top end of the sales funnel on the program. The answer to this need is a hybrid CPS and CPC billing model. After adding the commissions from both models, the advertiser can easily calculate the ROAS and evaluate the effectiveness of such a campaign. On the other hand, the publisher can convert the earned commissions into effective Cost per Click (eCPC) to easily compare the revenue from a particular campaign with other campaigns running in the pure CPC model. With this approach, it is possible to effectively reach the sales targets of running affiliate programs while maintaining a high diversification of the different publisher categories, regardless of where they appear on the user’s buying path.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and tell us what you mainly have to do at Affilizz?

I am a senior executive from the international media industry with a 20-year record of directing global brands and businesses. I have led international operations for globally renowned companies such as Future plc., Dennis, and Hearst Magazines.

For the past few years, I have been working for SaaS technology companies, helping tier-1 content media businesses diversify their revenue streams and maximise the opportunities offered through licensing intellectual property and affiliate eCommerce.

My role at Affilizz is pretty simple; it’s convincing our publisher and advertiser partners that the most effective and efficient way for them to make money from affiliate marketing is to use the Affilizz platform!


What’s the story and the business value behind Affilizz?

The team has a strong French media background who a few years ago saw the huge opportunity of affiliate marketing but had no idea how to do it well.  We soon realised that there’s more to building a successful program than putting a link on a page!  It was a steep learning curve!

It’s a dynamic, fast-moving industry and we found it is crucial to ensure that when we sent our audience to make a purchase, we sent them to places where the information was correct.

So, we quickly learnt that out-of-stock links need to be removed and prices need to be constantly updated – up to 40% of affiliate revenues can come from content over 60-days old – and this needs to be done automatically and in real time.

Our initial CTR’s were terrible then we realised that consumers want choice – we now know that 90% of consumers will seek to compare prices before making a purchase so we needed to develop a system that served up multiple merchants which meant we needed to work with as many advertisers as possible.

We soon found that instead of making brilliant content that generated demand we were searching for products or services then wasting time waiting for our dev teams to create ‘Buy’ buttons which were easy on the eye. So needed a simple frontend UX for Editors to sit on top of the sophisticated back end.

And underlining all of this we began to understand that affiliate is a data rich, information poor industry so we needed to create a platform with outstanding reporting.

Affiliz is all the above. It’s a platform that works with advertisers so that publishers can make the affiliate opportunity real.

This is what we learned in France and now we want to replicate it across the rest of the world.


Do advertisers need anything specific to work with you?

No! We’re really keen to work with as many advertisers as possible so that we can add their products and services to the 100 million+ offers we already store in our database.  This way, when our media partners look to offer their customers affiliate purchasing opportunities, Tradedoubler advertisers will be featured.

Sure! As well as rolling out globally we have plenty of new & exciting developments being launched on the platform. Highlights include:

· Price reduction alerts, so that when an advertiser reduces the price of a product our publishers will receive an automatic alert so that they can push content covering the product.

· Automatic detection of the topic covered in an article so that we can push relevant products. This is going to be particularly useful for back catalogues and allow publishers to build scale immediately.

· Linking products so that when an update is launched, we propose alternative or the newer product which will help keep content relevant.

We are also continually improving our reporting systems so that we can improve the ROI of brand campaigns for our publishers and advertisers.


What trends do you currently see in affiliate marketing and eCommerce in general?

For a bit of fun, we asked Chat GPT this question and it said it couldn’t provide a current analysis!  It did throw out the usual hot topics; personalization, voice, social, video, GDPR, mobile, sustainability and of course AI – but there was nothing inspirational.

So, I’ll give it a whirl instead.

I think trust is going to become more and more important over the coming months and years. Consumers will want to know they are spreading their hard-earned money with brands, media, and advertisers that they know they can trust.

With my media background hat on, this will mean people seeking information from sources they know are credible. Think of it like this; am I going to invest in a piece of technology recommended by a blogger I’ve never heard of (who could just be using Chat GPT for their review) or am I going to go to a site like TechRadar or Stuff who I know employ journalists who test the equipment who I can trust?

Publishers can now use a 2FA (Two factors authentication) with one-time password SMS to connect to their platform.

Technology update - Publishers

Publishers can now upload their multiple claims via an Excel or CSV file.
They also have the Claim upload history to access the results of the uploads (success, failure). In case of failure, it will allow them to do the necessary corrections and re-upload the file directly.



24.10.2022: Transaction inquiries

To give you an even better overview of your transaction inquiries, the date you created a transaction inquiry is now displayed at My Programmes > Transaction inquiries. This way, you can check whether and when your inquiries were recorded.

Now you can also see in your interface why your transactions were denied. Go to Reports > Leads – Sales Activity. Here you will find an overview of all accepted, opened, or denied transactions. If you move the mouse over the “denied” field, the reason is automatically displayed.

In addition, you will now also find the reason for the decline in your Excel, CSV, JSON, or XML file when you export the overview.
